Paint Booths for Wood Finishing: What You Need to Know

While most spray booths operate in similar ways, there are some characteristics that make certain models better for specific tasks. Woodworking spray booths are specifically designed to enhance the finishing process for wood items, including furniture and art pieces. These specialized spray booths offer many advantages, making the finishing process better, safer, and more efficient.

Spray Booths and Wood Finishing

In general, a paint booth provides a place to apply finishes to three-dimensional objects. In the field of woodworking, different projects may require unique finishes and coatings:

  • Stain
  • Paint
  • Sealer
  • Primer
  • Glaze
  • Powder coating (for MDF)
  • Lacquer
  • Varnish

Woodworking paint booths are designed to make it easier to finish wood items, improving the final appearance and condition.

Benefits of a Woodworking Spray Booth

A paint booth provides a favorable environment for the wood-finishing process. There are several advantages a specialized spray booth provides in a woodworking shop:

  • Better lighting, which can allow the operator to identify and fix issues with the finish
  • Proper ventilation, which can improve the overall air quality in the shop
  • Upgraded safety measures, which can help mitigate fire risks
  • Filtered exhaust mechanisms, which can reduce overspray and air pressure problems

Finishing furniture and other wood products is safer and faster with a paint booth that’s customized for woodworking.

Types of Woodworking Paint Booths

Spray booths for wood finishing are available in different configurations, but there are two styles that are the most common: enclosed and open face. Each type has unique benefits and challenges that render it better for certain shops and projects.

Enclosed Paint Booths

In general, enclosed spray booths take up more space in a shop than open face models. You must allow space for all four sides of the booth plus additional room for the doors to open. Enclosed paint booths also tend to be more expensive. However, this design makes it far easier to reduce contaminants that can degrade the quality of the finish. With an enclosed booth, it can be easier to control the air pressure and the airflow style and, in turn, the finish quality.

Open Face Paint Booths

As the name implies, an open face spray booth usually has three walls and a ceiling, with the fourth side being open to the rest of the shop. This style is generally more affordable than an enclosed model and may take up less floor space. Some open face booths are wider than they are deep (the opposite of many enclosed models), which may be better for some woodworking projects such as finishing cabinet doors. However, the open nature of this type of spray booth makes is more difficult to eliminate the contaminants that can negatively affect the finish.

Considerations When Choosing a Paint Booth

When you’re ready to upgrade the functionality of your woodworking shop with a spray booth, there are several things to consider. As discussed above, one of the most important aspects to decide on is whether you want an open face or enclosed model. There are other essential factors:

  • Size
  • Exhaust infrastructure
  • Fans and ductwork
  • ETL certification

The specifications of your shop may limit your options to booths of a specific size and/or exhaust structure. Your local laws may require you to purchase an ETL-certified model, or you may choose to do so for the added safety benefits.

Powder coating offers brilliant white booths!

Powder coating is the fastest growing finishing technology in North America, representing over 10% of all industrial finishing applications. So what is a Powder Coated Finish?

Have you ever seen a really shiny and clean metal piece and wondered what type of paint it was? It was probably a powder coated finish, which is an advanced method of applying a protective finish to practically any type of metal. It’s a sprayed powder that is a mixture of finely ground particles of pigment and resin. Once sprayed, the item is ‘baked’ at a very high temperature to cure the smooth finish and leave it with a sleek and durable ‘skin’. Here’s an old filing cabinet that we powder coated yellow.

Powder Coated Finish: The Powder Coating process provides one of the most economical, longest lasting, and most color-durable finishes available for metal. Powder coated surfaces are more resistant to weather, chipping, scratching, fading, and wearing than other finishes. Powder coatings produce no drips, runs or sags. Edge coverage and coverage inside holes and nooks is exceptional. See the process from our Powder Coating production on this new blog. Continue reading Powder coating offers brilliant white booths!

The Process of a Paint Booth Sale

It used to be that everything could be bought at your local hardware or general store. After that, there was Wal-mart (AKA: Wally World). Since the Internet has become a household necessity in the last decade, online shopping has skyrocketed and people are carving out niches that only the Internet makes possible. For instance, a stay-at-home Mom who can sew really well is able to sell her crafty pieces on Etsy or Ebay. Have some stuff you want to get rid of but don’t have the time or energy for a yard sale? (Plus, you really hate getting up that early.) Snap a photo on your phone and put it on Craigslist. People no longer have to fight the crowds at Wal-Mart or search from store to store. They can find everything, including extremely rare and hard-to-find items or Paint Booths, on their computer.

Shop with Caution: With online shopping come scams and rip-offs. After all, anyone can setup a web site and become an “online seller” without any credentials or validity. How do you know if it is a legit business or just a guy in his garage? It is extremely important that when you are ordering from an online retailer, do your homework. Read the “About Us” page on their site. Check them out on social media (Facebook / Twitter / Ect.) Are there pictures of their facilities, phone numbers, an address, email addresses, etc? How long have they been in business? Do they stand behind their products? Do they have a customer service department? Google their company name for any online conversation about them. Read their customer feedback. Always go with your gut instinct. Okay, rant over… moving on.

Here’s the process of your paint booth going through production! We’re going to demonstrate via photos (fun, right?!). All of our sales & customer service team members are based out of our home office, on the same premises as our manufacturing plant. Both located in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Once you have shopped our web site, watched our “About Us” video and liked us on Facebook…. You’re ready to order. Continue reading The Process of a Paint Booth Sale

Paint Booths in the Twentieth Century

“You can have any color you want, as long as it’s black.” – Henry Ford

WARNING:  Your paint booth may not be as safe as you think!

Have you ever wondered how they painted cars way back when? or if they painted cars? All cars seemed to be black, and I guess I never thought much about when people started painting their cars in body shops. So, I started my online quest to find something from the past in the car painting industry.  I found this old photo at www.shorpy.com and I think it’s super cool.

1926 paint booth

I love the cool old newspaper on the car’s windshield, a very economical way to paint! I couldn’t help but notice all the safety issues, or lack there of! No one is wearing a mask, the light hanging from the ceiling has a loose wire, there isn’t any ventilation and that huge oil puddle on the floor! Oh my! Back then there wasn’t an OSHA checking in on them or regulations to keep workers safe. If you didn’t want to die from paint fumes, you didn’t paint…

Do any of these practices sound familiar? There are still guys out there using Homemade Paint Booths and using their garage. Thank goodness that we have better, smarter and safer ways to paint today! Ask us how you can paint in one of our paint booths in just 7-10 days!

CONVERT YOUR SPRAY BOOTH TO A POWDER COAT BOOTH

DSC_0066Here’s the dilemma. You have a paint spray booth but the cost of painting is too expensive. Higher cost per square foot of coverage, higher labor costs and higher waste management costs.

Do you want to switch to the more cost-effective and durable powder coating finish? Why wouldn’t you? It’s easier to apply, applies in one coat and has a wider range of finishes. Problem is, booths should not be used for both finishes and you can’t afford a whole new booth specifically designed for powder coating.

Although a new powder coat booth is the ideal, we understand sometimes you’ve got to use what you have. Here’s how you can easily convert your spray booth into a powder coat booth.

·         Change your filter panels from dry arrestors to two-stage filters.

·         Add an after-box to provide third-stage filtration and allow recirculation of exhausted air into the shop.

·         Change out your painting equipment (HVLP or similar spray guns) with powder specialized spray equipment that charges the powder during the feeding process to enhance coating.

Lucky for you, Standard Tools has worked with numerous booth owners who have made this change, and we have done this process in our own shop! We can offer all the items you need to convert your current booth into a powder-coating booth…. filter grids, filters, after-filter box and spray equipment.

Not sure if you should use powder coat?  It doesn’t work with every finish or every product being coated, but it may be a good answer for your coating process.  Call us to discuss your conversion needs.  Our Sales team will gladly provide pricing so that you can compare a new powder coat booth with converting the existing spray booth.
