Here are answers to the most common questions\nabout paint booth fans and motors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What kind of fan do you use for a paint booth?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a paint booth, there are two types\nof fans. Each one performs a specific function: either pushing air into or\npulling air out of the booth. Air is pushed into the booth through a <strong>blower\nfan<\/strong>, which in many cases is part of an AMU. This setup replaces the air\nthat is pulled out of the booth by the exhaust fan to balance the air pressure\nfor optimal operating conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paint-booths.com\/category\/Fans.html\">exhaust fan<\/a> for a paint\nbooth is a <strong>tube axial fan<\/strong> with propeller-style blades. Our fans all use\naluminum blades that are best for fire safety because they don\u2019t spark.\nNon-sparking fans are important for paint booths because most paints and other\nfinishing products are flammable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does a paint booth need an explosion-proof fan?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several different safety\ncodes that may apply to paint booth operations from organizations such as the\nNational Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the Occupational Safety and Health\nAdministration (OSHA), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Your\nstate, city, or county may have additional requirements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the exact setup of your\nshop and your booth, you may need to use an explosion-proof fan in your paint\nbooth. For more information on explosion-proof requirements and our fans,\ncontact our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paint-booths.com\/CTUS.html\">Customer Service\nSpecialists<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How many CFM do you need for a paint booth?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The volume of air moving in a paint\nbooth is measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a simple rule of thumb you can use to figure out the right CFM for your booth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Side downdraft booths:<\/strong> Booth width (ft.) X Booth height (ft.) X 40<\/li><li><strong>Cross flow, open face, and semi-downdraft\nbooths:<\/strong> Booth width (ft.) X Booth height (ft.) X 100<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paint-booths.com\/category\/cross-flow-paint-booths.html\">cross flow booth<\/a> that is 16 feet in both width and height, the correct CFM would be 25,600. The best way to determine the right CFM for your booth is to follow the manufacturer\u2019s instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you measure the airflow of a paint booth?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a good idea to know how to\nmeasure the airflow in your booth. You may need to do this if you are concerned\nthat a fan isn\u2019t operating correctly or if you are trying to determine whether\nit\u2019s time to replace some filters. Additionally, both OSHA and NFPA guidelines specify\nminimum airflow requirements for paint booths in order to reduce the\nconcentration of flammable materials inside the booth. The airflow inside the\npaint booth is important for both safety and finishing guidelines. The ETL\ncertification that comes with many Standard Tools paint booths means that the\nairflow has been tested for safety on those models by Intertek. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paint booth airflow is usually\nmeasured in linear feet per minute (lfm). Older International Fire Code (IFC)\nrequirements designated a minimum airflow of 100 lfm. However, modern codes\nrefer to air exchange rates rather than airflow. You need to ensure a minimum\nof four air exchanges per minute when solvent-based or wet paints are used in\nthe booth. For powder-coating finishes, the minimum airflow required is 60 lfm.\nThe easiest way to measure airflow in your booth is with a special tool: a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dwyer-inst.com\/Product\/AirVelocity\/Vaneometers\/Model480\">Vaneometer<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which type of motor is used in a paint booth?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most paint booth motors are completely\nenclosed, fan-cooled styles. Some types of paint booths may need more than one\nmotor. Spray booth motors are usually available in either single-phase or <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencing.com\/threephase-motor-works-5191973.html\">three-phase\nmodels<\/a>. Three-phase motors are sometimes preferred for larger loads, but\nthe best way to know what type of motor your booth needs is to talk directly to\nthe manufacturer as well as a licensed electrician who can tell you what power\nrequirements your shop may have. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is an explosion-proof motor?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some motors are explosion-proof, which\nessentially means that they are designed to contain an internal explosion to\nprevent external damage or injury. Some common traits of an explosion-proof\nmotor are a UL-listed conduit box and an exterior finish that\u2019s\ncorrosion-resistant.
