Your spray booth cannot perform with clogged filters or incorrect media. Ignoring filter maintenance can also place everyone in the shop at risk for health and safety problems. Choosing the right filters, installing them correctly, and knowing the appropriate time to change them is essential in preventative maintenance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of Paint Booth Filters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several different types of filter\nmedia to capture debris, foreign particles, overspray, and other contaminants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Intake filters<\/strong> prevent dust, debris, and other small particles from entering your\npaint booth. Without a well-functioning filter, these tiny particles can damage\nthe finish quality. Each type of paint booth (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paint-booths.com\/category\/Downdraft_Paint_Booths.html\">downdraft<\/a>,\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.paint-booths.com\/category\/cross-flow-paint-booths.html\">cross\nflow<\/a>) may have a different style of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paint-booths.com\/product\/W-153_20x20-tacky-intake-filters.html\">intake\nfilter<\/a>, but the purpose is always the same: to protect the finish from\ncontaminants.There will be a different type of intake filters for booths that\nare heated with an air makeup unit. <\/li><li><strong>Exhaust filters<\/strong> trap overspray and other chemicals to prevent them from building up on\nthe fans and from being released outside the booth. There are several different\ntypes of exhaust filters, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paint-booths.com\/product\/20x20x15-bag-filters-W152B-CASE.html\">bags<\/a>\nand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paint-booths.com\/product\/W-222.html\">blankets<\/a>. Clogged\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.paint-booths.com\/product\/W-152A_20x20-exhaust-filters.html\">exhaust\nfilters<\/a> can allow toxic chemicals into the environment, increase the risk\nof fire, and\/or reduce the performance of the entire spray booth. <\/li><li><strong>AMU filters<\/strong> are part of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paint-booths.com\/category\/paint-booth-air-make-up-units.html\">air\nmakeup unit<\/a>, which provides replacement air into the booth to stabilize\ninterior air pressure. AMU filters capture large particles from outside air\nbefore entering the AMU and reducies the load on the booth\u2019s other filters\nbefore entering the booth.<\/li><li><strong>Optional filters<\/strong> can be added to your paint booth to create a two-sage or three-stage filtration.\nFor example, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paint-booths.com\/product\/W228-Case_CarbonFilter.html\">carbon\npolyester<\/a> filter can capture minute contaminants responsible for unpleasant\nodors. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paint-booths.com\/product\/20x20-pre-filter-W152C-CASE.html\">pre-filter<\/a>\ncan take care of sawdust and powder-coating particles before they enter the bag\nfilter. Depending on what you are spraying, this may be required.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to know which type of\nreplacement filters to get for your paint booth is to check the manufacturer\u2019s specifications.\nIt\u2019s vital to choose the correct style, size, and material for the replacement\nfilters to ensure your paint booth continues to function optimally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When To Change a Filter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By nature, filters will eventually become\nclogged with debris. It\u2019s essential to replace them when they become full of debris.\nUsing a paint booth with clogged filters drastically reduces the quality of the\nfinish, the operational efficiency, and the safety of the shop\u2019s personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to follow the manufacturer\u2019s\ninstructions for determining when to change your filters. Recommendations may\nbe based on the number of operating hours or on calendar weeks\/months. There\nmay also be OSHA, <a href=\"https:\/\/19january2017snapshot.epa.gov\/sites\/production\/files\/2013-12\/documents\/auto_refinishing_spray_booth_filters.pdf\">EPA<\/a>,\nand\/or state guidelines for filter maintenance that you should be aware of and\nfollow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exact operating conditions of your shop\ncan affect the time it takes for your filters to get clogged, so you may need\nto replace them sooner than the average time frame recommended by the\nmanufacturer. There are several visual cues you can rely on to determine when\nit\u2019s time to change your filters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Intake filters: debris in the\nbooth and\/or blemishes in the finish<\/li><li>Exhaust filters: overspray\nremaining in the booth and\/or continuous operation of the fan at 100% capacity<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, you should wait no longer than six\nmonths to replace an intake filter. It\u2019s a good idea to replace an exhaust\nfilter at least every month. However, it\u2019s best to conscientiously monitor the\nfilters to determine when they are ready to be replaced. You can use a\nmanometer in addition to the visual cues described above to get a clear and\naccurate picture of how your filters are performing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Understanding a Manometer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Installing a manometer on your paint booth can\nmake it easier to see when it\u2019s time to change the filter. All booths from\nStandard Tools come with a Dwyer manometer to measure air pressure. You should <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/c40wPbtFz5M\">install a manometer<\/a> at the rear of the\npaint booth near the exhaust filter so it can measure the difference in air\npressure inside the booth before the filters and on the other side of the\nexhaust filters. The more clogged the filters are, the less air flow there is\nthrough the filters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/c40wPbtFz5M\">install\nand calibrate a manometer<\/a>, you can monitor when the filter starts affecting\nthe booth\u2019s airflow and interior air pressure.
